What is WEB3? Why is it important?

The internet has undergone several phases of evolution since its inception, with Web1 (Read) and Web2 (Read / Write) representing earlier versions. However, the development of Web3, also known as the “Read / Write / Own” phase, is poised to revolutionize the internet as we know it. Web3 aims to offer users greater control and ownership of their data, with technologies such as blockchain, AI, and semantic technologies providing a more personalized and intuitive experience. In this article, we will explore the potential of Web3 and the opportunities it presents for businesses.

Before getting into what Web3 is, a couple of examples might be worth looking into. Chances are you’ve heard of the Brave Browser, an alternative to Google Chrome or Firefox. What makes it stand out? It is a browser which automatically blocks online ads and website trackers. So you’re basically using it in a default incognito mode, and your data, and browsing history remains protected. If you’re not familiar with the Brave Browser, Bitcoin is probably something you’ve heard of. For good or bad, it’s made the headlines for some time now. Put simply, as Investopedia defines it, it is a virtual currency designed to act as money and a form of payment outside the control of any one person, group, or entity.

These are only a couple of examples of what makes Web3. With the Brave Browser, there isn’t a company like Google that has access to your data. With Bitcoin, there isn’t a Central Bank which controls the money supply. Thus, there’s no or at least that’s the aim, that there is no centralised entity having control. You or your clients own your / their data.

So, what is Web3?

Web3 is a term used to describe the next generation of the World Wide Web, the internet as we know it. Often referred to as the “Read / Write / Own” phase of the Internet, the Web3 advances the earlier versions of the internet, Web1 (Read) and Web2 (Read / Write), to letting users no longer be just customers but own and participate in the governance of tech platforms online. Web3 aims to use Artificial Intelligence and Semantic Technologies designed to provide a more personalized and intuitive experience for users.
